What are the objectives of the Lipid Clinic?

The objective of the clinic is to individualise the cholesterol goals based on existing risk factors and thus reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes. In the process, atherosclerosis can be stabilised and even reversed at times by managing the various risk factors and lipid problems.

It aims at reducing recurrence of heart attacks and strokes in patients who have suffered events in the past. It also aims at early diagnosis of genetic cholesterol and triglyceride disorders and their treatment.

How does the clinic achieve the objectives?

  1. The clinic is looked after by a clinician who has undergone training in various aspects of cholesterol management.
  2. Specialised tests are carried out to find out the cause of high cholesterol levels.
  3. Cholesterol goals are identified based on the risk assessment.
  4. An understanding of the benefits and risks of the different lipid lowering medications is provided.
  5. If genetic problems are identified, the family members are followed up regarding future risks and management plans.
  6. Lifestyle modifications are integrated in the discussions.
  7. Problems pertaining to higher doses of medications, drug interactions and adverse effects when multiple medications are used are managed.
  8. Once goals are achieved, once or twice a year follow ups on a long term basis are advised.
