A basic lipid profile is a measure of total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-c, VLDL-c and HDL-c. An extended lipid profile measures Apolipoprotein B (Apo B) and Lipoprotein (a) in addition to the other parameters.

High cholesterol is influenced by how one lives his life, but one can also inherit it. An important inherited condition is Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) in which LDL can rise upto 600-800 mg/dl. Individuals with this condition can suffer from heart disease by adolescence.
Cholesterol isn’t just a “fat-persons disease,” even those that appear slender can have high cholesterol.
Children can also have high cholesterol either as a result of genetics or because of a poor diet high in saturated fat.
Although data are sparse, the available evidence suggests that the cholesterol levels are steadily rising among Indians, a trend which is opposite to what is observed in western populations. Indians experience heart diseases nearly 10 years earlier as compared to the caucasians. As per a study by ICMR, the prevalence of dyslipidemia (derangement in cholesterol) ranged from 75.% in urban Maharashtra to 87% in urban Chandigarh and 76% in rural Tamil Nadu to 81% in rural Chandigarh. In 2012, one in four Indians died of heart diseases according to WHO data. Epidemiologic studies in 2015 have shown that there are over 40 million cases of heart disease in India.
As per National Cholesterol Education Programme, American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology; everyone age 20 and older should have their cholesterol measured at least once every 5 years.
As per recent consensus by Lipid Association of India, screening for high cholesterol of all adults at 20 years of age or at the time of college entry has been recommended.
